Devonport Services Ladies 17 – 0 Camborne Women
Camborne Women kicked off their NC2 season with a defiant and encouraging performance away to Devonport Services. Facing a strong opposition that finished 3rd in the league last season, Town fielded a squad featuring a number of debutants, including four U18 players stepping up to senior rugby for the first time.
The host side seized early momentum, breaking through for an early converted try to take a 7–0 lead. However, far from being rattled, Camborne dug in deep. The defensive line showed outstanding resilience for the majority of the first half, repeatedly turning away Devonport’s attacks until the very end of the period, when the hosts managed to sneak through right at the death to extend their lead.
Camborne came out with renewed vigour in the second half, taking the game to the opposition. Launching sustained waves of attack, Town put the host’s defence under real pressure. Although Devonport added a single unconverted try to their tally during the half, Camborne never stopped fighting.
The dramatic climax of the match came during Camborne’s final attack. Vice-Captain Sofia Bishop powered through the defensive line and got within an inch of the try line, only to be denied by a heroic last-gasp Devonport tackle that forced a forward loss of control right on the line.
Speaking after the final whistle, Head Coach Ronan O’Neill praised the fight and character displayed by his side:
“I think it went really, really well. We lost 17-0, but our girls had Under-18s and players who have never played this level of rugby before, playing against a team that finished third in a good league last year. Absolutely fantastic, lots to work on, but lots and lots of positives as well.”
Looking ahead to the next fixture, O’Neill added:
“In a couple of weeks’ time on the 11th, we’ve got Bideford at home. We’ll assess what we’ve done today, see a few little bits that we need to work on, and turn Fortress Recreation Ground…”
