Luctonians 41 – 34 Camborne
Camborne gained the bonus point required to be confirmed as National Two West champions following a narrow away defeat at 2nd placed Luctonians.
The Cherry & Whites will now play at the highest level in their history next season becoming Cornwall’s first representatives at National One level for many years.
‘Town’ suffered a blow before kick off with an injury in the warm up for debutant hooker Tom Channon forcing a late reshuffle and a shift to the front row for unsung hero Jordan Nicholls.
For Camborne this was a performance full of passion and power with Nicholls and man of the match No 8 Herbie Stupple in particular to the fore.
After Kyle Moyle had given the visitors the lead with a penalty Luctonians took charge to go 17-3 up by the end of the 1st quarter.
On 24 minutes the ‘Town’ pack mauled the home forwards over from a lineout 15 metres out for Shaun Buzza to dot down. Full back Moyle added the conversion.
Though the home side went further ahead a superb Josh Matavesi show and go gave left wing Alex Ducker space for a corner try and 15-22.
Luctonians again increased their advantage before flanker Buzza barged over as the interval neared and Moyle’s regulation conversion made it 27-22 at the break.
The opening exchanges of the 2nd period were cagey with Camborne needing just one try to bag promotion.
Although the home side were first to score the historic moment duly arrived for the Cherry & Whites on 59 minutes. Full back Kyle Moyle and lock Jamie Prisk combined with some lovely hands to find centre Matavesi who’s scoring pass sent lock Adam Hughes romping over to spark the celebrations.
Moyle’s conversion cut the home lead to 34-29 before the remainder of the game played out.
The home side sealed their play off place with a converted score before Camborne ended the match on the Luctonians goal line from where the hard working Buzza drove over to complete a deserved hat trick.
Camborne will celebrate a remarkable season of 3 promotions for their adult teams and receive the National Two West trophy at the final League game of the season on Trevithick Day when Chester are the visitors (3pm kick off).
