Loughborough Students 14 – 43 Camborne
Match report by Martin Symons.
Camborne continued their strong start to the season by running in seven tries to record a first ever victory at Loughborough.
The Cherry and Whites got off to a dream start building early pressure which saw Number 8, Shaun Buzza, adjudged held up over the line. From the resulting goal line drop out ‘Town’ again attacked and lock, AJ Hussell, duly burst through the middle to dot down. Josh Matavesi’s routine conversion made it 0-7.
Still inside the 1st quarter the visitors doubled the advantage as prop, Jon Drew this time, charged through the cover to score under the posts with centre Matavesi again adding the extras.
On 22 minutes Robin Wedlake fielded a wayward clearance kick and set off on a dazzling run down the right touchline. When halted at the corner flag the winger’s pass inside found Ben Priddey following up for the touchdown and 0-19.
Thereafter, Camborne had to defend resolutely on a number of occasions to keep the spirited home side out and ensure the scoreline remained the same at the break.
Soon after the resumption the Cherry & Whites bagged the bonus point as centre Connor Gilbert powered through the defensive line to score wide out. This effort was promptly followed with scrum half CJ Boyce darting over from a close range scrum and Matavesi’s conversion put the visitors out of sight at 0-31.
To their credit Loughborough would not lie down and the hosts deserved converted tries in the 55th and 60th that reduced the deficit.
Any hopes of a late home revival were swiftly snuffed out by ‘Town’ when lock Adam Hughes promptly drove over from the back of a maul near the try line.
Going into the closing stages hooker Priddey was on hand to bag his brace after more slick handling and Matavesi converted from a wide angle to wrap up a satisfying victory.
