Camborne 38 – 17 Redruth
Match Report by Martin Symons.
Camborne began their home National Two West fixtures in style by defeating local rivals, Redruth, in front of a bumper crowd at the Recreation Ground.
The rampant Cherry & Whites had the try bonus point in the bag by half time but the Reds fought back in an evenly contested 2nd period bagging a brace of converted scores in the process.
‘Town’ went 7-0 in front early on when hooker, Ben Priddey, was mauled over from an unstoppable catch and drive for Josh Matavesi to add the extras.
Redruth then opened their account with a Dean Wills penalty but still inside the 1st quarter a long pass from fly half, Sam Walker, gave Harry Larkins enough space to dive over in the Turnstile Corner for 12-3.
On the half hour, with the visitors down a man following a yellow card, home centre, Connor Gilbert, and wing, Robin Wedlake combined to send full back, Larkins, romping over wide out for his second unconverted try of the afternoon.
As the interval neared, all action flanker, Jordan Nicholls, burst through the Redruth cover to charge in for the bonus point try with centre, Matavesi, landing the conversion making it 24-3 at the break.
Soon after the resumption, Camborne went out of sight when scrum half, CJ Boyce’s pass found Josh Matavesi who barged over from close range for a touchdown which he also converted.
On the hour the Redruth pack piled on the pressure from successive penalties and eventually No 8, Chris Rovery, claimed a try under a heap of bodies. Wills duly slotted the conversion for 31-10.
After a stop start period of play featuring a number of telling tackles on both sides ‘Town’ went further in front with a 6th try from the impressive Walker with Matavesi again on target with the conversion.
The visitors would not lie down late on and with the final play of the game scrum half, Dan Rutter, rounded off a series of forward drives by grounding a corner try, well converted by Wills.
