Camborne got their National Two West campaign off to a flying start with a bonus point victory at Chester.

The Cherry & Whites were slow to settle after the long trip North and the big home side quickly established an early eight point lead.

In response a slick handling move involving Sam Walker and Alex Ducker promptly gave full back Harry Larkins enough room to squeeze over as the visitors cut the deficit to 8-5.

Midway through the half ‘Town’ went in front when hooker Tommy Southworth dotted down from an impressive forward drive in field from a lineout. Fly half Walker knocked over the regulation conversion for 8-12.

Chester regained the lead with a converted score but as the interval neared Camborne went through multiple phases before flanker Jordan Nicholls powered over with Walker again on target with the extras.

With ‘Town’ leading 15-19 at the break Chester briefly regained the advantage with an unconverted try but thereafter the Cherry & Whites dominated proceedings.

Fijian internationals Josh & Sam Matavesi combined superbly to break the home cover and allow prop Jon Drew to gallop over from fully 25 metres for the bonus point try. Walker banged over the extras and soon after he repeated the dose after a try of his own following a neat handling move.

With a thirteen point lead at 20-33 Camborne played territory astutely to restrict Chester’s opportunities to get back in contention before a trademark try by left wing Ducker made the game safe.

Going into the closing stages the Cherry & Whites made it seven tries for the day as skipper Sam Matavesi powered over from close range for brother Josh to convert.

On the final whistle the spirited home side gained a bonus point with a last gasp consolation try after a period of late pressure.

Camborne’s attentions now turn to the upcoming local derby clash with Redruth with a big crowd expected at the Recreation Ground.
