Camborne RFC

Colts TEAM

The vital transition between Junior and Senior rugby, steeped in tradition and the best of the Rugby Spirit.

Brothers on and off the field

The Camborne Colts play a crucial role in bridging the gap between Junior and Senior rugby, providing a vital platform for 16-18-year-olds to continue their rugby journey.

The team’s resurgence is a testament to the dedication of  coaches, Chris Hewitt, and Wayne Bennetts and his son, Jacob. Following the significant impact of Covid-19 on youth rugby participation, they spearheaded the reformation of the team, effectively “press-ganging” former players and introducing new faces to the game. This initiative laid the foundation of a rag-tag U15s team, which has now transitioned into the thriving Colts squad.

Now boasting a squad of over 35 members, the Colts have become a beacon for aspiring young players across the area, attracting talent from areas lacking local teams or game-time. This influx of talent has created a dynamic and competitive environment, fostering a unique blend of rugby styles and experiences.

Led by a dedicated coaching team, including Wayne Bennetts, Chris Hewitt, Nigel Endean, and David Mankee, the Colts compete regularly across Cornwall on Saturday mornings.

The team travelled to Ghent, Belgium, over the Easter 2025 period, to take part in the Ghent Easter Festival – an exciting opportunity for players to experience international rugby and build lasting camaraderie. Entering two teams, one of which containing 3 sets of brothers, finished a respectable 2nd place.

Special thanks to Tim Powell, who until tour, was a great coach and medic.

On and off the pitch

These young men play for each other. Having had to have re-build from the ground up, our second year Colts have formed a strong bond and now, including this season’s initiates, every game is played for each other.

Brotherhood

The strong sense of fraternity oozes from the Colts. On the field they work for each other and off it, a strong social aspect which will often see the top corner of The Rec occupied by their signature cream chinos and blue dress shirts at senior home games.

Performance

Even with some of our players only having played for a few seasons, you’ll be able to spot our boys pulling on the Black and Gold of Cornwall, and those that attend, taking part in representative rugby for Truro College.

Social

It goes without saying that there are a number of rugby traditions that come with Colts rugby and it is the duty of these young men to see them passed down as they transition to the next stage.

Bonds for life

Away from any other age group, this is where the bonds for life are formed. On and off the field, this is where important connections that will follow these boys their entire lives, are fostered.

Ask most veteran players, and I bet it’s the Colts years they remember the fondest.
