Pre-season at Camborne RFC is normally a fairly quiet affair. Ours certainly wasn’t!
Since the closing day of the season on the CLX stage at Trevithick Day – where the whole squad, led by Sam Matavesi, sang Camborne Hill – the club has hosted:
● Four evenings of club meetings from late June into July
● Watch parties for Fiji, England, and Scotland, with The Cornish Fijian in the kitchen
● An Evening with the Matavesi Brothers
● The Bryher’s Boys in concert raising funds for Trevithick Day CIC
● Our stall at Camborne Show
● Camborne RFC Awards Night
● 26 July: Continuum Care’s Autism Awareness Family Fun Day at Crane Park with Hannah Davey, Will and Carole Garwood, Pioneer Billys, Trevithick Day CIC, and CLX
● 10, 17, and 24 August: Just Try Rugby with Kernow Piskies, Cornwall Pride, and Focal Studios
● 14 August: Our Pathway Squad’s first-ever match, winning 52–13 against Redruth Albany in front of around 250 spectators
● 14 August: Camborne Amateur Boxing Club’s annual awards night
● 15 August: Cornish Pirates and the inaugural David Roberts Cup, welcoming 2,389 fans from across the county
● 16 August: The first Camborne Youth Tagfest and Colour Run
● 22 August: Summer Rugby Festival across The Rec and Crane Park
● 30 August: LWC and Bolingey Barbarians Charity Day, Beer and Cider Festival, the Bolingey Barbarians women’s first fixture, and “Stack” Hinds’s final match
Through all of this, our volunteers have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every event ran smoothly and to prepare for the coming season – the biggest, most challenging, and most exciting in our history.
To everyone in our rugby community – our Friday works team putting in the hours to prepare the ground; the Sponsorship and Community Team securing much-needed funding for the season ahead; the players, physios, coaches, and support crews preparing for action on the pitch; the grounds team keeping the grass green; the media team keeping everyone informed; the Board and Committee Chairs guiding from behind the scenes; our matchday volunteer stewards and first aiders keeping fans safe and well; our bar staff and Trevor for keeping the club open all through the closed season; and finally, our Youth section players, coaches, and volunteers who have kept training and powering events throughout the summer – thank you.
Let’s get ready for next weekend!
