CAMBORNE RUGBY CLUB SECURE LANDMARK SIGNING OF FIJIAN INTERNATIONAL SAM MATAVESI

Camborne RFC are thrilled to announce the signing of Sam Matavesi, the Cornwall-born Fijian international hooker, in what is undoubtedly one of the most significant signings in the club’s proud history.

With 40 caps for Fiji, including appearances at two Rugby World Cups, Sam brings elite-level pedigree and invaluable experience to the Cherry & Whites. His decorated career includes winning the Top 14 title with Toulouse in 2018/19 and most recently lifting the Gallagher Premiership trophy with Northampton Saints in the 2023/24 season.

Internationally, Sam was part of the Fiji squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, one of the nation’s proudest modern achievements. He also played key roles in two historic victories—Fiji’s first-ever win over Wales in Cardiff in 2024, and the famous triumph over France in Paris in 2019—standout moments in an extraordinary international career.

Sam returns to Camborne with 75 senior caps already to his name, further cementing his deep-rooted connection to the club and community.

Matavesi signs from Top 14 side Lyon, bringing further top-level experience as Camborne looks ahead with real ambition and belief.

“This is a statement signing,” said Director of Rugby Steven Larkins. “To have a Camborne boy come home—and to have Camborne men driving this club forward—is something that makes me very proud. Sam’s return speaks volumes about where we want to go. His leadership, experience, and connection to the club and county will be invaluable both on and off the field. For our mini and junior players to have someone like Sam to look up to is absolutely invaluable for their development and inspiration.”

Speaking on the move, Sam Matavesi said:

“The idea of playing alongside my brother Josh, and having my wife and family settle back into life in Cornwall with close friends and loved ones—it was too good to turn down. At this stage in my career, family is the most important thing. They’ve sacrificed so much—leaving friends, learning a new language—and now it’s my turn to give back.

Being an active member of the Royal Navy, I’ve been fortunate to have their support in pursuing my dream of playing at the highest level. I’m looking forward to getting back into Navy life while also giving back to the club that shaped me.”

Off the field, Sam will also take on the role of Player Pathway Director, overseeing Camborne’s mini, juniors, and colts setup. His focus will be on ensuring the next generation are prepared and supported to develop their own careers—hopefully producing a few more internationals in the process through this wonderful club.

A massive thank you goes to Tony Chapman and CLX Professionals for their continued support and belief in the club’s direction. Their contribution continues to make these ambitions a reality.

Welcome home, Sam. The Recreation Ground is ready.
